Women in these communities are still subordinated to patriarchal principles and are entrusted with the running of the household even when the husband is not working.

Three rivers, three languages

As a result of the transformations after socialism, Gemer, originally one of the richest regions of Slovakia, did not have time to adapt to the free market and undergo a successful economic transformation. Mass displacement, industrial decline, and unemployment followed. The population of the region, mostly Hungarian Roma, has to resort to alternative forms of economic activities and livelihood.
